Our Cooperstown All Star Village Experience
We just got back from our trip to Cooperstown All Star Village, and what an experience it was! This was my fifth time visiting, having been there three times with my kids and dad as a coach and twice as the head coach with Zoned. Cooperstown is a unique blend of exhaustion, excitement, challenges, and endless fun. It's a whirlwind of emotions and experiences all packed into one unforgettable week.
The Setup: Coaches, Players, and Games
We had 12 players, one bunk, and four coaches—though some years we've managed with just two. The schedule was intense: sometimes playing 2, 3, or even 4 games in a single day, with game times ranging from the early morning at 7 AM to the late hours of 11 PM, and yes, even 1 AM games! The environment is a mix of dirt, mud, and cabins filled with new, interesting smells—truly a sensory adventure. But amidst the chaos, there are great memories, smiles, tears, jokes, and moments that will last a lifetime.
Guidance and Fun: The Coaches' Role
As coaches, our primary job is to create memories and help these young players learn to navigate life with a bit more independence. It's about appreciating the 12U players with all their quirks, attitudes, and playful spirits. It's essential to be adaptable and have fun, even when things get tough. Some players may be away from home for the first time, learning to make their beds or change their clothes, which can be daunting.
Preparation and patience are key. It's not just about winning games; it's about enjoying the journey, staying present, and ensuring that every player leaves with memories they'll cherish forever.
